Imagine a place where young people could explore a huge range of careers in one place! and ... What if a career resource used the power of media for education!
Ok you guessed it! WIRL Career is your online jobs guide where students can see and hear about careers rather than reading a paragraph of text.
Unlike other resources, which are just text descriptions of different vocations, WIRL Career is based on individual video segments featuring insights and tips from young practitioners working in different fields. WIRL provides an experience which watching a simple video or reading a job description cannot. It imbues the student with the wisdom of someone who has already been there and knows What It's Really Like(WIRL).
According to the chinese proverb a picture is worth a thousand words. This is also supported by modern science which concludes that: we remember little of what we read, some of what we hear and most of what we see. In that context it is impractical for a student to do work experience in five different areas just to see what a career is really like. However the next best thing to actually doing is seeing! Or better yet - seeing through the eyes of some one who is doing.
With this limited picture is it any wonder that career advisers report that some of the careers they are asked most about include: forensic investigator or how about landscape gardening or interior designer or maybe hairdresser. This is not really surprising given the popular tv programming in the media at the moment.
Since young people rely on a mental picture of a certain career then naturally the media influences this mental picture which in turn has a huge effect on career decisions.
But media can also be used for education (rather than entertainment or advertising). In this way WIRL Career is based on a rich media experience designed to open a student’s mind to the world of careers around them.

WIRL segments cover a range of careers and industries. These segments are generally 4-5 minutes in length and cover issues like; What is good about the career, what is hard, what an average day is like, what future pathways exist and what a young person needs to do to move into this area. These segments are based on young practitioners with whom students can identify.
WIRL Career is an online jobs guide where students can search careers they are interested in and then watch a short sharp video segment on the specific areas they are interested in.
WIRL Career won't solve all your issues. You still have job placements, work experience, government programs, university entrances, change of preference and maybe even a teaching load. But WIRL Career is the new standard in career education designed especially for young Australians.
